| WHEN YOU MOVE TO THE COLLEGE |

No, you can't take it all with you. You might need to leave behind your Precious Moments figurines, all your trophies and blue ribbons, and your Beanie Baby collection. (Take a few, if you'd like, but leave the rest of your collection at home.) Remember these words as you (or your friend or family member) pack up to head for a college dorm: be selective. This goes for personal items as well as decorative items. Take your time, and really consider the choices your make. If you absolutely love your stuffed animals and can't get to sleep at night without them, take them with you. But realize that this probably means something else will have to stay behind. Begin at least a few weeks before your move by creating a list of everything you think you'll need in your dorm room. Don't forget to add these decorating must-haves: Bulletin boards and thumbtacks. When it comes to bulletin boards, go for a large one where you can tack on everything from bills to be paid to favorite snapshots. Pictures of family and friends. You may be an adult, but you'll still come down with the flu or have a bad day now and then. Hanging up pictures of the people you love will help you cope through rough times. Lounging/reading pillow and clip-on lamp. If you purchase only two items before you leave, it should be these. Lounging pillows are more solid and heavier than pillows designed for sleeping, they have arms that enable them to sit up by themselves, and they keep you propped up nicely while you read in bed. (Some even have pockets on the arms for pens, eyeglasses, and other items.) Attach the clip-on lamp to your headboard or other convenient location, and you can easily study in bed whenever you need to. Hanging aids. You'll be hanging lots of things on your walls, yet these items are the easiest to forget. Don't be stuck with just thumbtacks (for your hanging) and a high-heeled shoe (for your hammering). Bring a hammer, double-sided tape, a screwdriver, small nails, screw-in hooks, nails, screws, and wall hooks that adhere with removable adhesive. |
